I sent a copy to [log in to unmask] asking if it was real, with no response yet.

There were six calls ahead of me, on the phone help line.

There is another office on campus doing HR related things, that has a Click here to read this confidential information - with no link to a campus address.

Subject: [MSUNAG] Fw: Start of the Semester Test Message

I hope I’m not the only one that is bothered by this message. I’ve tried long and hard to tell my users to NOT click any links they receive in an email. Now I have to tell them that this one is OK, but not the other ones, and there isn’t an easy way for them to tell other than teaching them about virustotal.com

Subject: Start of the Semester Test Message

Please click here to acknowledge receipt of this message (link removed)

As part of our continuing efforts to improve safety on campus, we test our various notification methods at the start of each semester to demonstrate how you can receive information during a threat or emergency. These urgent messages ask people to take specific actions for their own safety and provide critical information.

This semester we changed our service provider to Everbridge. This change gives us a more robust system and connects us with several of our local partners. The message will look slightly different from the one you received at the beginning of fall semester.

One of the features of this system is that it will ask you to acknowledge or reply to confirm that you received the message. This will allow us to verify receipt of the information in our system. Once you confirm receiving the message, the system is designed to discontinue other attempts to contact you. As we progress throughout the semester, M S U Police will provide more information about the abilities of this critical service.

As an affiliate of Michigan State University, you are automatically added as a recipient of the messages. We also ask that you take a moment to log into the M S U Alert portal at alert.msu.edu to update your contact information so you receive M S U Alert messages in the way most efficient for you.

If you have any questions about the MSU Alert system, please visit https://alert.msu.edu for information and to submit requests for support.
