Hey everybody!

Over the last few weeks, I’ve fielded quite a few questions about texting (SMS) on campus..

IPF Telecom Systems has recently developed a new service that allows text messaging to work across all the East Lansing, Detroit and Grand Rapids campus phone numbers.  Essentially this means that campus users can now send and receive SMS and MMS messages to and from your 10-digit campus phone number.  We are offering the service as two options :

-          Personal Access ($10 / number)

o   Access messages via an application (Windows, Mac OSX, iOS, Android, Web).  The applications works similar to an instant message application such that when people send you messages a pop-up shows up so you can send and receive threaded messages.

o   Use Case:  Individuals or departments can use this application with their existing phone numbers.  You no longer have to give out your personal cell phone number to send messages, and you can receive the messages people are probably already sending to the number.  You can have multiple people logged into one account.

o   Cost:  $10/month per number you wish to use with the service, including unlimited messages, billed directly to your department account.

-          API Access ($10 / number)

o   Have applications send and receive text messages as notifications to employees, customers, etc.  Uses a REST API that can be triggered from your applications to send to multiple people at once.  Can also build a two-way system for people to use for 2-factor authentication, notification systems, group chat systems, etc.

o   Use Case: Built for programmers to extend their existing applications to enable text messaging.  This service is not to be used for bulk-messaging or bulk-advertising (all users must be opt-in).

o   Cost:  $10/month per number you wish to use with the service, including unlimited messages, bulled directly to your department account.

You can find out more about the service on the IPF Website at : http://ipf.msu.edu/services/avaya-messaging-service.html, or you can call our office at 353-5515.  You can also sign up on the above webpage as well.

Thanks!
