I'm not sure how many of you know about this organization, the Lansing Chapter of Information Systems Security Association, I just heard about them myself a week ago via LinkedIn.  They meet once a month from August to May to discuss security related issues. There were IT people from the State of Michigan, MSU Federal Credit Union, Independent Bank, Lake Trust Credit Union and a number of other local organizations.

The meeting this morning, my first in attendance, was to examine the Linux operating system, a brief summary of how to use the Command Line Interface (CLI) and finally simple scenario to identify a compromised system.  While I've used Linux for a few years, there were some new things to me and it was interesting to see how the presenter tracked down the compromise.  It doesn't sound like the group's restricted to Linux by any means, but anything security related.

Next month they're meeting on a Saturday for a "Net Wars" session.  From what I understand the presenter will take those in attendance (on their own systems) through some exercises dealing with a classroom compromised system.  I'm sure there's more to it then that, but they said details would be forthcoming.

The associations website is http://lansing.issa.org/ and should have more information on the next session soon.  They also mentioned that the revamped (and more attractive version) of their website would soon be released.  There was a cost to attend, as a non-member it was $15, but that did include a large buffet lunch.  Members receive a reduced price.

In any case, I felt it was beneficial to attend and thought I'd pass it along in the event that others weren't aware of it and might be interested in learning more.
