Can you provide any evidence that "most people" use Gmail something other
than mail.msu.edu as their primary mail service?  And most people would mean

is using a mail service other than mail.msu for this communication.

It does not "hide" anything.  The name used for the preference icon is
poorly chosen but configuration options are grouped into multiple views
based on function.  Placing every configurable option at the top level of he
interface would truly lead to an unusable cluster f&#*.  Your assertion that
forwarding is the "most important option" is highly debatable.
