I use the GParted Live CD whenever I need to resize or modify partitions. It is non-volatile which means it doesn't affect the data on a partition (well that is as long as you don't delete the partition, lol). I have used it many times to fix newer Dell laptops, which come with a ridiculous partitioning scheme, with out losing data. I've disabled system restore, which I understand also disables shadow copies, but Vista is being stingy, and still only wants to relinquish 38 gigs.
