Just an fyi to the list, that ACNS is posting the message below to http://service.status.msu.edu shortly. We will update Service Status as we progress. Service Status Content: MSU’s central e-mail system – mail.msu.edu – data backups to tape were temporarily suspended while alternative backup solutions are put in place. The last back-up was completed on 10/23/07. The increased demands on mail.msu.edu have placed a strain on the system; specifically, the main storage filer. As a result, the system has performed at below-normal speeds during the backup process. While data backups to tape are currently suspended, the system does have built-in redundancy to protect from data loss. For example, the storage filer uses double parity raid volumes that protect system data in the unlikely event that two drives fail at one time. It also has a number of hot standby disks that are automatically provisioned in the event of a disk failure. New storage filer units are being purchased that will replicate e-mail data to disk at a remote site. The backups are planned to resume on or before January 7, 2008. Replicating data to disk instead of tape will allow for near real-time data duplication and significantly reduce recovery times in the event of a disaster. The new storage filer units should increase the system’s overall performance and may allow us to increase disk quotas for faculty and staff.
