I don't know about that. I don't think IRC is very difficult to use.  
There are plenty of "non-techies" out there that use IRC. One nice  
thing about IRC is that it is a well established standard. It is a  
simple, robust protocol, and it can be extended to do a lot of things.

I used to work in an office where we used IRC to monitor the health  
statuses of our various pieces of hardware. It was pretty simple to  
implement and very useful IMO.
