I second the use of R-Studio to recover data, even on drives that are not damaged - R-Studio allows you to recover a deleted file from your drive if you haven't already overwritten the free space on that drive.

Also, I'd recommend Steve Gibsons SpinRite available at http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm. With sector-by-sector analsysis of a drive's surface, as long as the drives hardware is operational and spinning, we've had great success with SpinRite getting a drive into at least a readable condition so we can pull the data off the failing drive.

I'd give R-Studio a try before sending the drive anywhere. I pulled twenty gig off a drive that had been through a recovery service and a hotshot recovery program at another company both of which said it was non-recoverable. I used to recommend On-Track, and still would for clean room service.

The demo will let you preview what is recoverable and you can register it at that point.
Good luck.

That probably depends upon how damaged the drive is. If the drive is still accessible then I would try Capital Data in Lansing:

On the bother hand, if the data is really messed up and you have a large budget, then OnTrack is hard to beat:

Does anyone have a recommendation for a company that can retrieve data from a damaged hard drive?
