I had two GX 270 system boards replaced under the warranty extension
this past spring. The bad system board took out the memory and power
supply in one case, and the memory and CPU in the other. In both cases,
Dell replaced all parts at no charge. Both systems were no longer
covered by warranty. However, I was aware of the problem -- a third
system board had failed the previous fall in a GX 270 that was still
under warranty. When the symptoms in these other 2 were similar, I
called Dell. It never hurts to ask. The worst that they can say is no.

The first extension was until Jan. 1, 2007, then July 1, 2007, and now
to Jan. 30, 2008. But this is just the motherboard, not other components
(i.e. the power supplies that fail just as regularly). So, as I hinted
at in my first message, the motherboards have had their coverage
extended to the current time. I doubt that they will extend them again
as the computers will then have been in service almost 5 years, but I
have been wrong before.

Oh? Do tell! As I understood it, the agreement was 'till Janurary 30th
2008. Is that incorrect?

As an aside, have people at MSU encountered that problem? My spy inside
Dell said that about 9 - 11% of those machines developed problems
because of the capacitor debacle. None of my 270ish seems have ever had
problems, but a friend who ordered several elsewhere had gobs of
problems.
