Hi: The attached document, entitled "Trusted Network and Host Security Management in the Context of the MSU Statement of Acceptable Use", draft revision of 19 April 2005, has been distributed to members of the Network Communications Committee and to the Deans/Chairs/Directors list in the past couple of days, but I haven't seen it yet on the MSUNAG list, so here it is. In the interests of platform neutrality, this is in PDF format instead of the MS Word format distributed to the other lists. I have also put it on the web at http://www.pa.msu.edu/people/perkins/Trusted_security_management_0419.pdf for future reference, or in case the attachment gets stripped off. In a nutshell, this document describes guidelines which network and system administrators can follow in order for the probable response to a hypothetical request to the Vice Provost for LCT to grant permission for implementing security measures to be "yes". The corollary to this is that now the Vice Provost doesn't need to be actually asked, unless someone in the affected unit objects to some security measure covered under the guidelines, or if the practice in question is not covered. According to the bottom of the 1st page, David Gift invites comments, questions, or concerns. At the NCC meeting he attended a couple of weeks ago, he said he'd like to release the final 'official' draft on or about May 1st, so that gives NAG members about a week to get in their say. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- George J Perkins http://www.pa.msu.edu/people/perkins/ 1209B BPS Bldg, MSU Phone: 517-355-9200 ext 2567 East Lansing, MI 48824-2320 FAX: 517-353-4500
