They check them only as long as those emails are actually being sent through MSU SMTP servers. It's quite easy to send msu.edu mail through any other mail server you have relay access to and avoid the AV scans totally (assuming that mail isn't being delivered to another msu.edu account. Viruses for the most part don't use your outgoing SMTP server, so any person outside the @msu.edu address space should not assume virus checking has been done. Although you really should never assume it has been done anyhow. Catching of known viruses does little more than cut down on the annoyance factor of deleting them for most people.
