I'll echo what others have said: I've never understood the too-often-seen attitude embodied by comments like "I hate to bother people by putting a question (answer) on the mailing list." If the subject is of concern for one person on the list and it's on-topic for the group, the odds are that it's of interest to others. That's exactly why groups exist. The people who have this reservation about posting messages need to get over it, so we certainly don't want to create an IRC chat to reinforce the idea that there are on-topic messages that don't belong on the mailing list. So, the reason it would be a bad thing is that it would split the "conversation" between two different "channels", reducing the value of what we have already.
