Amin, >I have a hard drive with very important data, went bad, I was wondering if >anyone has tools or software to retrieve the data, or know any place? My favorites, in order of severity of problem: (1) Good old Norton Utilities, or similar commercial utilities. (2) PC Inspector File Recovery, available for free download at <http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm>www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm. (3) SpinRite from Gibson Research Corporation at www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm. This one costs $89 for one machine, or (4 * $89) = $356 for a site license. It is purported to work miracles, *as long as* the drive still physically works. (4) Data recovery services such as Ontrack (www.ontrack.com), DiskTek (www.disktek.com), or CBL (www.cbltech.com), as a last resort if the drive is physically dead but the platter is still OK. These are pricy, on the order of $700 if I remember from the last time I inquired, so you have to really want the data if you go this route. -- David McFarlane, Research Technology Specialist Dept.
