Seems like that avoids the MS-Net protocols, uses encrypted passwords,
bypasses a Samba converter machine, is free and open source. Plus it
works! (at least for 3 days now...)

If you get a fresh Windows machine out of the box, you have to install
something on it for AFS access to work. Why not use the full client?
