All I have found that having a wins server defined in your tcp setup greatly increases your ability to map \\afs\homes or \\afs.msu.edu\homes from a Windows box. You can check this by running start/run/winipcfg or start/run/ipconfig . If you are still not having any luck you might run nbtstat -R from the command window and try again.
