Rich, Sounds like Windows 2000 could be setup to accommodate all the different environments. Here is what worked for me in the past: 1. Setup Windows 2000 to login to the domain that you use most often. Let's assume that your domain is FARMLANE and that your ID is RichW. 2. Create a local administrator account. (to be used only for emergency) 3. Assign administrative rights and permissions to FARMLANE\RichW on your laptop. 4. Login once with RichW into the FARMLANE domain to setup your profile on your laptop. 5. Map any needed drives that are not mapped by any login scripts and configure them to reconnect at logon. 6. Setup your network card(s) with DHCP and don't forget to register. 7. Once your profile has been created in step 4, you can now login into FARMLANE domain with the RichW ID even when you are disconnected from the network. This is possible because Windows 2000 uses your locally cached profile to give you access to your laptop. 8. At home, assuming that you are using a cable modem (which most of time uses DHCP) and/or a DSL router (which most of the time is setup to use DHCP) simply connect and login to the FARMLANE domain as RichW. In the event that you setup a different domain at home, let's say that your home domain is HOMERICH. You can simply map drives to any computers that sit in the HOMERICH domain by providing the appropriate ID and PW. 9. The same process as described in step 8 can be used to connect into guest LANs, Dial-up connections and possibly Wireless connections as well. Once you are logged into the FARMLANE domain while disconnected from any LAN, your network drives will be re-connected whether you are at work, home, guess LANs and possibly with wireless connection. Note: This can be setup for multiple users. This may be an FAQ, so please point me to good sites if there's a one-document cookbook on this. What is the best way to give a laptop multiple network personalities? Suppose a single laptop lives in multiple environments: -- Plugged into a home network where I want to do Windows networking -- Plugged into MSU's network where I want to mount my AFS space -- Plugged occasionally into guest LANs -- WiFi at home -- WiFi at random public spaces (airport, coffee shops) -- Dialup into Michnet or AOL on the road. Is there a combination of Windows settings and 3rd party tools that will let me quickly choose from a menu to swap from one environment to another? I have fiddled with the hardware profile stuff a bit under Windows 2000 but it seems to want to tie things to different adapters. Here I've got 3 different adapters but each can assume multiple personalities. Obviously I don't want to participate in Windows networks when in WiFi mode at an airport, but I *do* want to in wired mode at home. I have Windows 2000 and Windows ME laptops to solve this on. My guess is there are other users on this campus with this need, and maybe even fleets of laptops where it'd be nice to solve. Thanks... /rich
