The primary focus of this session is how to plan for recovery and restoration of vital business functions and the IT systems that support them in the event of a disaster. The primary audiences for this seminar are computer support personnel as well as faculty and staff who are responsible for MSU business functions and IT systems. Topics will include: · Why Disaster Recovery Planning? · Definitions: terminology used in disaster recovery planning · Emergency response, disaster recovery, and business continuity · Overview of planning process · MSU's Unit Guide to Disaster Recovery Planning · Your action plan · MSU's Procedure for Incident Response to Emergencies · Disaster Recovery Planning Case Study: Department of Chemistry · Questions and discussion The goal of disaster recovery / business continuity planning is to identify critical business functions and the systems that support those functions, and to prepare a plan in advance of a potential disaster. Institutions that have undertaken such planning efforts report that, should a disaster actually occur, recovery and restoration of services can take place in a much more effective fashion. Although the primary focus of this seminar is continuity of computer-based services, we will also address issues related to emergency response. Presenters will include: · Tom Atkinson, Senior Academic Specialist, Department of Chemistry · Lt. William Wardwell, Department of Police and Public Safety · Rich Wiggins, Senior Information Technologist, Computer Laboratory · Remarks via video by: Bruce Alexander, Associate Director, Administrative Information Services, and Jeanne Drewes, Assistant Director for Access and Preservation, MSU Libraries This seminar is a slightly updated version of a presentation last June. We plan to present this seminar periodically. Units that wish to organize a special presentation for their area should notify us of their interest; please send email to: [log in to unmask] Seminar Location and Time The seminar will take place on November 16, 2001 from 10:00 a.m. until noon in the International Center Library (formerly known as the "Con-Con Room").
