The URLs for the various drafts of the Draft Guidelines for System and
Network Administration have been distributed to those on the NCC mailing
list, but are not being made publicly available until the document has
gotten further towards the stage where it can be reasonably submitted
to the authorities for approval (or at least official commentary as to
what would need to be changed in order to be approved).

Since MSU NAG members are not the general public, and do make up the main
target audience for the document, I don't see any reason they shouldn't
be able to download it. The most recent version which is on the web is at
http://www.msu.edu/user/ncc/Documents/sysop24Sep2001.pdf -- just remember
that nothing in it is in any way official at the moment. Some of the
items which we intend to be in the final version, including the sample
user notification forms and system-specific AUP templates, simply do not
exist yet.

Several NCC meetings' worth of modifications/additions have been discussed,
mainly affecting pages 11 through 19, so I imagine that there will be a
newer updated version out soon, but it has not been announced yet.

The NCC is setting up a working group to specifically address Anti-virus
issues not only with respect to the Guidelines document but also with
respect to potential additions to the pilot E-mail service and with
respect to re-visiting the possibility of buying a campus site license
for one or more of the main commercial Anti-virus software packages. This
working group will start weekly meetings next week (I know, since I am
arranging them).

The main impetus for forming the working group was a round of discussion
during Paul Hunt's visit to the 22 October 2001 meeting of the NCC. This
discussion was in some manner a continuation of the prior discussion by
the MSU NAG, at its 19 October 2001 meeting and on this mailing list. One
point which was made abundantly clear by Dr. Hunt was that any system
which looks at user-owned or -generated data such as E-mail messages has
to follow strict protocols for maintaining the integrity and privacy of
the data, and any such tool which might examine the bodies of pilot E-mail
messages would definitely have to be on an "opt-in" basis -- nothing may
be done without the express explicit knowledge and consent of each user
affected by it.
