Hi Karen,
John Gribbin is an excellent science writer and has written quite a
bit about the founding of the Royal Society and a good summary of the
history of science, that covers geoscience as well as everything else.
Simon Winchester's book on Krakatoa is also an interesting read that
tries to relate the eruption and its impact to larger societal
problems in Indonesia at the time.
Cheers,
Ben
