I've mostly completed this task in our center, it will not break anything. Just add the drivers using the 'Additional Drivers' interface if possible. Try your best to navigate the installation wizard directly to the applicable .ini file and try to avoid using the installation wizards that come with the printers if possible, that is where I would see it breaking the existing printer.
The most difficulty came with a Dell 1720 which asked for the 64bit Windows Server disk for some reason (which I don't own and am hesitant to allow MS to start dumping 64bit files into the windows dir of a 32bit system if I did). So I have yet to successfully add that specific driver in 64 bit, but still I haven't broken any of the initial printer shares. I did successfully get our Dell 3110, so not all Dell's are plagued. HP was no problem, Canon ImageRunner was a success.

Hi,
We are using several HP printers, and right now, those use the Hp Universal driver. Additionally, we have a Canon image Runner 3045, which uses its own driver.

It is my belief you are just adding a driver to your printer server and will not break anything with your legacy connections. What is the model of printer you are using, that will play a big role.

Subject: [MSUNAG] 64 bit Print drivers on 32 bit Print Servers?
Hi all,
Right now, I'm running a 32 bit Server 2003 machine which is also my print server. I now have several Windows 7 64 bit clients, and am unable to connect them to the shared printers on the server, it basically indicates that the proper driver was not found.
I've just begun researching this issue, and it looks like I can add 64 bit drivers to the server using Printmanagement.msc via the procedure described here:
Has anyone done this before, and is there any risk of breaking the printer connection for my 32 bit clients?
Thanks,
Al
