For months, I've had the problem, to a greater or lesser extent, of SMTP sessions not timing out and piling up until incoming mail couldn't get through. Certain senders, like michigan.gov gave up after one unanswered knock. We had missing or delayed email and there was much gnashing of teeth and many dirty looks. People stopped talking to me in the hallway.
You may recall my asking for advice from the list last summer when mail from the governor's office was bouncing back. I also opened a couple of tickets with the Help Desk, replaced the server network card, tweaked numerous ip and memory settings, pulled my hair out, chanted incantations, and devoted more hours to the subject of email than I think I'm going to be happy about on my deathbed.
I resigned myself to restarting the mail server every few hours for the rest of my life to clear the hung threads.
But today, as if by magic, THE PROBLEM IS GONE!
Don't get me wrong--I'm ecstatic--but I didn't *do* anything... What changed? I don't know. I just hope I'm not jinxing anything by sending this email...
