Deputy Director of Education & Outreach, Sanford Underground Science
& Engineering Laboratory
In collaboration with scientists, engineers, and educators from
across the country, the state of South Dakota is embarking on a major
initiative to create the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering
Laboratory. After extensive review led by the National Science
Foundation, the former Homestake Gold Mine in the Black Hills of
South Dakota has been selected as the preferred site for a new
national research facility. With 370 miles of tunnels, some nearly
8,000 feet below the surface, the former mine is being transformed
into a state-of-the-art laboratory to unlock mysteries of the
universe, investigate geologic processes, and search for exotic life
forms in extreme environments. Central to this effort are goals of
increasing public understanding and helping to prepare the next
generation of scientists and engineers.
South Dakota's Center for the Advancement of Mathematics and Science
Education, a statewide Center of Excellence located at Black Hills
State University, is leading early education and outreach efforts at
the lab and helping to develop a longer term plan for federal
consideration. CAMSE seeks a visionary leader in science education to
help direct this work and maximize learning opportunities for K-12
students and teachers, university students and faculty, and the
general public.
Required qualifications include: 1) a doctorate in science, science
education, or related field; 2) five years of teaching experience; 3)
five years of leadership experience; 4) exceptional communication and
collaboration skills; and 5) expertise in one or more of the areas of
teacher professional development, curriculum development, informal
science education, or research internships. The opportunity exists
for academic rank and title at Black Hills State University,
depending on interest and qualifications.

With apologies to my children and yours, who will be wishing for a
little petroleum in a few decades:

Remember how, 30 years ago, we looked at the future and said, "Thirty
years from now, if we don't act, we're going to be in trouble"?
Well it's now. And we are. Because we didn't. http://whatawaytogomovie.com
