Hi,
We have a need for a few 208V UPS in the 4-6kVA capacity range. I the
past, I've used one small UPS powering a couple machines, so this is a
step up in scale. Does anybody have insight into purchasing and
managing these units?
Our room power is generator backed, but for utility electrical outages
the UPS needs to ride-out the several second generator startup time (and
then the switch back to utility power). In the case of some other
failure, we need time to cleanly shutdown filesystems and turnoff
machines (a few minutes). The UPSs don't need long run times, I'm
figuring we need 5 minutes at full load and will double this to allow
for battery degradation. We're not trying to insure uninterrupted
availability, just data integrity with clean shutdowns.
I'm looking at 3 Tripp-lite Smart Online 208V 6kVA units each with a
single external battery pack. The units will plug into our 208V 30A
outlets and a single switched PDU will be plugged into each UPS to
connect computers.
Does anyone have an opinion on the different UPS brands? APC seems to
be a bit more expensive than Tripp-lite --- is it worth it? What about
service contracts, how long and what fraction of the UPS price have you
paid for them? Where are you buying these, I have a quote from Dell
that seems ok.
Thanks,
Tom Rockwell
