OPB has been in contact with Richard Firman and I believe that he is using
data from CLIFMS (Course Load, Instruction, Funding and Modeling System) for
his Faculty Activity report. Burt did a good job describing CLIFMS, but I
would like to expand a little upon his comments.

CLIFMS is the MSU computer system that records (via web based entry) and
provides reports (via web based reports and SQL Server queries) on the
following:

1-Links between faculty/teaching assistants and the course sections that
they are responsible for teaching.

2-Faculty Effort Distribution -- the percent of time spent on: Scheduled
Instruction, Advising and Counseling, Courses and Curriculum, Other
Instruction, Research, Creative and Scholarly Activity, Public Service,
Administrative and Committee Time.

3-Professional Accomplishments (Refereed Papers, Non-Refereed Papers, Books,
Delivered Papers, Major Accomplish, Admin Activities, Advising, Proposals,
Evidence of Merit, Patient Care, Web Course Development and the Number of
Activities with an Outreach Component).

For further information or a login id, contact either Mary Black (353-6463,

Hi Richard:

The MSU Office of Planning & Budgets (OPB) <http://opbweb.opb.msu.edu/>
maintains a system called CLIFMS <http://ntweb1.ais.msu.edu/clifms/>
which contains the University's central data collection instruments
related to faculty work (the Faculty Effort Form and Professional
Accomplishment Form). The data that these form take in is numbers and
percentages, not titles of articles or books published, etc. Many
different units on campus develop their own paper forms to collect a
wide range of data from faculty and then have support staff enter it
into the various appropriate university forms. You should consider
contacting OPB for further information about these systems and maybe to
keep them abreast of your efforts as well. For my own part, my office
(University Outreach) also maintains a form in CLIFMS to collect data
about noncredit instructional programs carried out by faculty and
academic staff. I'd be happy to talk with you about that, if it is of
interest.

Take Care,
Burt Bargerstock

Subject: Faculty Activity Report

We have received a request in our college to produce an online version
of the Faculty Activity Report. Does anyone know if this already exist
at a university level? Has anyone done this themselves for their
college?

Any input, communication, or suggestions would be very helpful.
