Does anyone know if JGE changed it’s open access policy? I noticed that when I don’t login into my university, Taylor & Francis is charging $53 to access papers. The model used to be a one year embargo and then open access. It isn’t a problem for me, but I need to be able to communicate the policy changes to my colleagues who do not have institutional subscriptions to JGE.

NAGT members have online access if an individual is not able to access

Thanks, Carol.

I have always had institutional or membership access so it isn’t a problem for me.

It does make me a little sad that all the effort to keep JGE somewhat open access was lost in the transition. I understand the reasoning as publishing has costs, but I’m still sad. I have a number of colleagues who cannot afford even the small cost of NAGT membership.

Dear GEO ED Research Community,

It is that time of year of writing letters of recommendation for those
applying for grad school or scholarships. I thought I would share some
research on letters of recommendation.

While letters can provide insight into a candidate’s strengths and
weaknesses, research shows that they are rife with bias. Letters have a
tendency to favor men over women, Whites over people of color, and
applicants from research-intensive over non-research institutions. For
example, letters often describe women as helpful, pleasant team players,
while men are often described with standout terms like “brilliant,”
“focused,” and having “potential.”

The Geoscience Education Lab at Northern Illinois University (NIU) anticipates an opening for a post-doctoral scholar. The postdoc will lead a mixed-methods investigation of students’ spatial conceptions of erosional processes, support the collection and analysis of quantitative classroom data, develop and publish manuscripts for education and geoscience journals, and develop proposals for external funding. This is a two-year position funded by NSF award #1835950. The project includes the opportunity for a week-long residency at the Research in Spatial Cognition laboratory at Temple University. Required qualifications include: PhD in geology, geoscience, or related discipline, strong interpersonal and organizational skills and the

Where GER has impacted traditional geoscience

Hi all.

I am in the process of trying to convince my Department of Geosciences to welcome a geoscience education research specialization for a Ph.D. awarded by the department. This has been an uphill battle and one of the reasons seems to be that GER is not considered by many in the department as traditional geoscience (by the bye, geophysics was in the same boat through the 1930s to 1950s and look at it now). Anyway, during one extended discussion, I made the supposition that GER had in some instances probably advanced the field of geoscience and said that I

Glenn:

Good for you for pushing the boundaries!

Iris Totten and I came up with “geocognition” for this exact reason, plus the fact that the work many of us do is not simply housed in traditional educational spaces (although education can occur anywhere) nor is it always focused on teaching/learning. I tend to speak about my work as geocognition or “at the intersection of human dimensions and earth science”. Generally, the level of interest over geocognition or human dimensions is much higher than over GER. Do I think that is fair? No – I value all work. Sadly, not everyone

I echo Julie's sentiments... Great question, Glenn.

You asked, "Have there been cases, published research where a GER project
actually advanced traditional geoscience?" Tim Shipley, Basil Tikoff, I,
and Cathy Manduca published some of our work in the Journal of Structural
Geology, for reasons that sound similar to Julie's publication in
Tectonophysics. Your colleagues might find the reference compelling:

Glenn:

I can lend some support using what occurred at Arizona State, which is a Research I school and the largest university in the U.S. I was hired with tenure as a Structural Geology/Arizona Geology/ Field Geology person, but soon became frustrated with how little students learned in the intro classes. I delved into the research that had been done by science-education researchers in other science and math departments at ASU (think Tony Lawson and David Hestenese), as well as those in the college of education (Mike Piburn). When I gave teaching workshops (many as part of an NAGT speaker

Hi All,
Great discussion. I have too many thoughts swirling to get them all down,
but I'll throw out a few.

First, while I'd not be shocked if you could find examples where GER
projects advanced traditional geoscience research, I'd also not be
surprised if you couldn't make such connections. It's not where I'd focus
the argument.

I meant to note too that there's a gendered aspect to the problem, as Joe
Henderson noted to me in an aside. That adds a whole 'nother layer of
suckiness to the problem as many on this list know better than I.
Cheers?

Just chiming in here to elaborate on that point a bit. I suspect that part of the issue is the gendered nature of the disciplines themselves, with the “hard” geosciences perceiving the “soft” social sciences - and educational research in particular - as something of lesser importance and done by women. Dana Goldstein has a nice treatment of how this shift occurred in public education broadly as a means of deprofessionalizing teachers to low their status and thus paying them less money:

GER sessions at GSA

Greetings!

There are lots of great GER sessions at GSA in Indianapolis this year - and
with the abstract deadline approaching on August 14th (11:59pm PDT), I'd
like to draw your attention to four NAGT-GER division-sponsored sessions on
active learning, learning in the field, climate literacy, and methodologies
and theoretical frameworks.

Session T84 is somewhat unique, focusing on the decision-making process in
conducting GER studies. It builds on two previous sessions on methods in
GER, with the goal of building our community's awareness of different
methods and theoretical frameworks. You can view previous presentations in
these sessions from 2015 <https://nagt.org/nagt/divisions/geoed/methods>

and Rebecca Haacker. Submit your abstract today!

Session ID: 50301
*Section*: *ED*
Session Title: Mentoring the Whole Student: Strategies for Research
Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
Session Description:

Research internships rely heavily on the efforts of scientific mentors to
guide undergraduates through their research challenges and often take on
additional supportive roles. In this session, speakers will present on
successful mentoring structures, strategies for preparing mentors, and
creating supportive environments that allow student interns to succeed.
