Dear Eship Faculty Listserv,

The Burgess Institute considers YOU a champion of entrepreneurship and innovation on MSU's campus! There is much that I have wanted to share with you over the last year, but sending emails through this listserv has fallen by the wayside for me. I would like to be able to more dynamically share information with you, allow you to post questions and interact with other champions, and for us to be able to get together at least once a semester to share updates from the Burgess Institute and to hear how entrepreneurship and innovation are growing in

If you are receiving this message, I have added you to (or kept you on) the Entrepreneurship Faculty Listserv ([log in to unmask]).

This list will serve as a communication method for important news or updates from the Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation as it relates to the Entrepreneurship and Innovation minor, and other academic-related updates. I will schedule a virtual meeting later this fall for anyone on the list to attend to hear more about the E&I minor and our hopes to grow it significantly in the coming years. I hope you will be a partner in those efforts!

Hello, everyone.

If you are now, or will be teaching methods of Customer Discovery, this is for you. I highly recommend this even as an introduction to the topic.

The University of Michigan is conducting a class called "Introduction to Customer Discovery" in conjunction with a workshop for instructors who also want to learn how to teach the course. I've just spoken to them, and it is probable that we could get 1-2 people in the course that's coming up. The agenda is attached and it's largely self-explanatory. The instructor training is in the morning on the days when the

Why Pitching Your Product Is Not Enough For Investors

Good article. Desiree, please post this to the eship website.

https://blog.startupprofessionals.com/2018/07/why-pitching-your-product-is-not-enough.html

As an occasional angel investor, I always ask for a business pitch to get me in the mood. I'm still amazed at how many technical entrepreneurs don't have a business pitch, and offer me their product pitch or product spec instead. I'm a technologist, so I always love to learn about the product, but every investor needs to make sure you have a business, as well as a product.

Good morning,

We are embarking on a review of MSU's entrepreneurship curriculum, including the 40+ electives, to identify gaps in our current offerings and make plans accordingly. Ken Szymusiak (who teaches BUS 190) and Danielle DeVoss (who teaches AL 114) have already agreed to serve along with a few others. If anyone is interested in rolling up their sleeves and helping out, please let me know. We'll get started just as soon as we have a committee formed, and my hope is that our work will conclude by the end of summer at the latest.

4 ways college entrepreneurship classes fall short
According to a Bentley University Survey, over 66 percent of millennials would like to start a company.

It's no wonder that colleges, universities, and private institutions are trying to ride the wave and offer entrepreneurship training classes, programs, and even degrees. In a recent feature in Forbes by Andrew Yang, the number of Entrepreneurship Education and Training Programs (EETs) has quadrupled over the past 25 years, and yet, rates of private business ownership for households under 30 have declined<http://www.wsj.com/articles/endangered-species-young-u-s-entrepreneurs-1420246116> over 60 percent during the same period.

Toward our objective of creating a culture of entrepreneurship at MSU, we need more organized programs for those students who see themselves as social change agents but don't self-identify as entrepreneurs. As you all know, we've collectively been talking for a while about how to jumpstart a social entrepreneurship program at MSU. My intuition is that there's strong student interest, but it's not the same students that we're currently reaching with our outreach about entrepreneurship.

Attached is a brief set of slides that shows our progress through this semester and gives a current snapshot of the enrollment in the Minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation and related programs. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Thank you for your support. I hope to see everyone at the E&I Roundup at 3:00 pm on January 25, 2017 at the Kellogg Center (a meeting of just the E-Advisors will precede the Roundup at about 1:30 pm). We'll have formal invitations going out around the middle of the month.

Good Morning Eship Faculty,
Do you know students enrolled in the Entrepreneurship & Innovation Minor<https://entrepreneurship.msu.edu/academics/courses/>? To fulfill the requirements of the minor students will need to complete two E&I Experiences Options<https://entrepreneurship.msu.edu/experiences/>. We are hosting the perfect opportunity this Fall to accomplish one of them! Startup Weekend is coming up, November 4-6, 2016. The weekend is designed to provide students with an entrepreneurial experience that will give them skills and abilities they cannot learn in the classroom.

To all students earning the Minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation:

I'm excited to let you know that we've created a new course code at MSU: ESHP (for entrepreneurship). As a result, some existing courses (like BUS 190) are being renamed to entrepreneurship courses (i.e., ESHP 190). Nothing else is changing at this time except the names of the courses (the requirements of the E&I Minor are the same as before and ESHP 190 replaces BUS 190 as a required course). But as you go to schedule for classes for next year, please note that the NEW names are already in

Everyone,

I realize it's short notice, but tomorrow at 4pm several of us are getting together in the Broad College to discuss, broadly, MSU's E&I curriculum and look for new opportunities to create courses and hire adjunct faculty next year.

If anyone would like to participate in the meeting, we welcome your involvement. Right now we're scheduled to meet in my office (N120 in the Business College Complex), but if we have sufficient attendance, we'll find a larger room (which shouldn't be too hard on a Friday afternoon).

Creating the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs

Teaching entrepreneurship is about encouraging students to dream big---but also sharing with them a disciplined approach to acting on those dreams. But one might question whether we are realizing the real potential of entrepreneurship in our classrooms? Are we truly conveying the entrepreneurial mindset? Do students actually improve on key entrepreneurial competencies when they take entrepreneurship courses

A hearty thanks to Sam Carter for putting together this Course Review Form. We'll use this to evaluate all electives in the E&I Minor. We can decide on Monday whether a paper form is sufficient or to turn this into an electronic form. I've also posted it to our shared Google Drive Folder. I've re-attached the latest version of the white paper. IMHO, much of the groundwork is now done. The next step will to be evaluate courses (current and prospective) against this instrument.

A subset of the curriculum task force met last week and we accomplished the following:

* Thanks to input from Constantinos Coursaris, we added more information to the white paper about the managerial traits of successful entrepreneurs. V2.3 is attached and I hope it is nearly final.
* Sam Carter is putting together an online form, which will serve as our instrument to document that courses which are electives in the E&I Minor satisfy our learning outcomes. Faculty can use the online tool to provide 1-3 bullet points in these two areas (for each elective):

He said in our meeting that he and the instructors who teach the largest enrollment courses in the Minor today (Ken Szymusiak for BUS 190, Danielle DeVoss and Amy Haimerl for CAS/AL 114, himself and Constantinos Coursaris for MI301) would probably be able to quickly and

I watched an earlier version of this webinar some time back, and I found it to be very interesting. I’m not sure where to insert it into our current curriculum unless someone creates a new course, but I think it has value. You may want to check out the webinar. If you have interest in incorporating this into your curriculum and/or developing a new course, then let’s talk.

Do you sometimes find it difficult to attract five star name brand entrepreneurs to come to your class each semester?
Do you wish that you had access to a more inclusive and diverse set of entrepreneurial role models?
