EMU Institute for STEM Education, Outreach, and WorkforceDevelopment

 

The College of Education at Eastern Michigan University seeks to hire a Director to lead the establishment of the EMU Institute for STEM Education, Outreach, and Workforce Development. A leader inteaching and education, EMU was founded in 1849 as Michigan StateNormal School. The university belongs to the Mid-American Conference and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. EMU is a Carnegie-designated doctoral institution (R2)¡Xhigh research activity. The College of Education is divided into three departments and offers over 85 majors and minors and over 30 graduate degrees, including two Ph.D. programs. It has one of theoldest Special Education programs in the United States. The mission of the College of Education is to inspire, educate, and prepare professionals to be outstanding educators, leaders, and scholars in urban, global, and diverse educational and community settings.

 

Eastern Michigan University enrolls a diverse population ofstudents. The EMU campus is located in the Ypsilanti/Ann Arborcommunity, five miles from downtown Ann Arbor, 35 miles westof Detroit, and 50 miles from Toledo. Chicago, Cleveland andToronto are each a half-day¡¦s drive away.

 

Description of Responsibilities

The Institute Director provides leadership for the Institute forSTEM Education, Outreach, and Workforce Development. Thisis a full-time, 12-month administrative position. This position issupervised by Dean of the College of Education, or theirdesignee. As the Director of a community-oriented and campus-wide institute, the Director will report regularly and collaboratewith steering and advisory committees comprised ofcommunity and campus constituents. Areas of responsibility include:

¡´      Overall coordination and fiduciary responsibilities for funded projects related to STEM education, outreach, and workforce development, such as the Driving Possibilities partnership with Toyota USA, LincolnConsolidated School District, Ypsilanti CommunitySchool District, and Washtenaw Intermediate SchoolDistrict.

¡´      Supervision of Institute staff.

¡´      Provide short- and long-term Institute strategyand planning in consultation with steering/advisory committees and the Dean of Education.

¡´      Sustain collaborative community and campus relationships with relevant STEM Education and STEM Industry partners as well as families and community leaders.

¡´      Seek external funding to support community-drivenInstitute activities.

 

Minimum Qualifications

1.     Earned doctorate in Education or STEM field andacademic achievement equivalent to the rank of a tenured faculty member at Eastern Michigan University.

2.     Demonstrated commitment to and achievement indiversity, equity, inclusion and justice in educational settings.

3.     Minimum of three years ofadministrative/leadership experience in education/STEM settings, including experience managing budgets.

4.     Demonstrated ability to build and sustainpartnerships with internal and external constituents and collaborators.

 

Preferred Qualifications

1.     Experience managing sponsored programs in education settings, including fiduciary responsibilities.

2.     Familiarity with key issues and experience implementing evidence-based practices in K-12 STEM education, outreach, and workforce development.

3.     Experience working collaboratively and building trusting relationships with K-12 education, postsecondary education, and/or STEM industries.

4.     Demonstrated record of securing external funding.

5.     Ability to think and act strategically for short- and long-term goals.

6.     Experience supervising staff.
