The Resource Biologist is an entry level sportfish biologist position whose work is prioritized using the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks statewide and management area fisheries management plans. This includes and is not limited to implementing management practices pertaining to fish habitat, fish distribution, angler demographics, sportfish harvest, and rare and nongame species.

Specifically, the Resource Biologist position in the Ft. Pierre, SD office 1) leads the sportfish management programs in the small impoundments throughout the Upper Missouri River Fisheries Management area including fish surveys, fish trap and transfer, fish stocking, regulation recommendations, education and outreach, and habitat and access improvements; 2) assists with sportfish management programs on the Missouri River reservoirs; 3) assists with research projects pertaining to sportfish and non-game species, fish habitat evaluations, and/or hatchery product evaluations; 3) oversees equipment maintenance on all fish survey gear including nets, boats, vehicles, and facilities; 4) provides administrative support to managers as a department spokesperson and technical representative to share information and expertise; 5) recommends management programs based on survey results to enhance sportfish species; and 6) performs other work as assigned. This position does not supervise staff.

The Resource Biologist (aquatics) must be able to spend long days in the field away from the duty station with up to 30 overnight trips expected per year (sampling locations up to 3 hours from duty station 1-way); lift 50 lbs.; and work on small and large vessels during inclement weather including high winds, high and below freezing temperatures, full sun, rain, and snow. Anticipated start date for this position is April 9th, 2024.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
The ideal candidate will have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to carryout fisheries management initiatives on the Missouri River impoundments and accompanying small waters within the Upper Missouri River Fisheries Management Area. We are looking for applicants with the ability to critically evaluate and interpret fisheries data, use common data analysis protocols to answer internal and public questions and describe fish populations, orally communicate survey results and management practices to both professionals and the public, able to make quick, sound decisions in the field, contribute to state-wide management initiatives, and work efficiently in a team environment.

A strong history of both written and oral communication is preferred.

Knowledge of:

  *   principles used in the management of sportfish populations;
  *   ecology of sportfish and non-game fish species and ecological and socio-economic factors affecting sportfish populations;
  *   interaction among the public, resource management agencies, and wildlife and fisheries resources;
  *   physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of lakes, ponds, and streams;
  *   research, laboratory, and statistical methods as they relate to fisheries management;
  *   basic principles and terminology of data processing;
  *   principles of effective human relations and dealing with the public.

Ability to:

  *   organize and analyze available information and draw sound conclusions;
  *   write clearly and concisely and in logical sequence;
  *   favorably present and promote departmental priorities, services, and actions;
  *   effectively plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion to meet schedules and deadlines;
  *   budget monetary, material, and equipment resources;
  *   communicate effectively and work well in a team environment.
