Assistant Professor in Japanese Business Management, National University of Singapore



The Department of Japanese Studies, National University of Singapore (NUS), is one of the largest Japanese Studies departments in the Asia-Pacific. The Department invites applications for the position of Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Japanese Business Management.

Applicants can come from various disciplines and specializations but must have a PhD and must be able to teach basic courses on Japanese Business and the Japanese Economy in addition to more specialized courses in their field of specialization. We are especially interested in candidates who have worked on creative industries, entrepreneurship or the internationalization of Japanese business and economy.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate strong academic and teaching abilities, and willingness to promote a collaborative departmental culture. They are expected to teach existing classes within the department and are encouraged to also propose new undergraduate and graduate courses based on their area(s) of expertise. Fluency in English and Japanese is required. Scholars who can contribute to interdisciplinarity in research or teaching are particularly encouraged to apply.

The Department of Japanese Studies was founded 40 years ago and currently has eleven faculty members specializing in a variety of fields such as anthropology, politics, history, popular culture, literature, performance, linguistics and geography. The Department belongs to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) that houses both disciplinary and area studies departments. The Japanese Studies Department is supported by a comprehensive Japanese language programme in the university's Centre for Language Studies. Courses offered by the Department are open to and attract students from other faculties across NUS.

NUS is a leading university in Asia. It provides rich resources and opportunities for research, competitive remuneration, and generous benefits, including subsidized housing and medical coverage. The selected candidate will receive a start-up grant and be eligible to apply for various other sources of internal and external funding and grants.

Candidates with outstanding research achievements may be eligible for appointment as a Presidential Young Professor (PYP) at the rank of Assistant Professor. This offers a start-up grant package of up to SGD 250,000, and an additional SGD 250,000 for discretionary spending.

3.    Statements of research accomplishments and plans and teaching philosophy/methodology
4.    Complete list of publications (including theses and dissertations) and samples, as well as citation and impact analysis of research output (if available)
5.    List of course taught and teaching evaluations (if available)
6.    Names and contacts for three referees and the PhD supervisor (total four)
