Book presentation summary:
Employers consistently point to strong intercultural leadership skills as the key to professional success. In a complex, fast-paced and interconnected environment, constraints of building rapport become, however, all too quickly apparent. In many business books, cross-cultural engagement is still largely treated based on frameworks that scaffold cultural variation as a universal phenomenon. In these models, the behaviour of leaders is assumed to be pegged at the national level and thus fixed. They make dealing with unfamiliar others look deceptively easy. The book offers a different, humanistic approach. Communicating with genuine curiosity and appreciation for people and the world around us can better build relationships. And the starting point for making good contact with others is to look inward, not outward.
