The New Year has come early at International Business Review with the publication of the February 2024 issue (volume 33, issue 1). Happy reading!

The issue starts with not one, but two, excellent Perspective articles. The first Perspective is authored by Bernhard Dachs, Sara Amoroso, Davide Castellani, Marina Papanastassiou & Max von Zedtwitz on “The internationalisation of R&D: past, present and future.” The authors discuss major trends that will shape the internationalisation of business R&D in the future. They suggest that new scientific discoveries will provide new opportunities to innovate; the growing scientific capabilities in emerging economies will create new hot spots for relevant knowledge; new research activities will emerge from the need to combat climate change; and that digital technologies (including artificial intelligence) will further facilitate coordination and knowledge exchange within MNEs and help to create new products and services.They conclude that IB research should bring nation-states back into the analysis as actors, not as mere locational factors, and build on its rich tradition of embracing multifaceted approaches and transcending intellectual boundaries and explore the dynamics of MNE R&D internationalisation.

The second Perspective is authored by Stewart Miller, Fiona Moore & Lorraine Eden on “Ethics and international business research: considerations and best practices.” The authors emphasize that ethical research matters; it enables researchers to trust each other and their findings, and provides a basis for society’s trust in the research. They offer guidance to help IB researchers avoid some common ethical pitfalls and to promote best ethical practices. To this end, they identify ethical considerations (mistakes and bad habits) that can occur when applying quantitative or qualitative research methods that involve collecting and analyzing data in IB research. They also identify ethical best practices for data collection and analysis.

The issue continues with four regular articles on international trade (trademarks; product innovation; export assistance; and country-pair psychic distance); two on corporate social responsibility (dissemination in GVCs; costs of equity); and three on HRM in cross-cultural settings (global virtual teams; language ideologies; female career progression). The issue concludes with articles on advertising expenditure and happiness; foreign subsidiary performance; family firms and cross-border acquisitions; and corruption and intrapreneurship.
