“This talk commences with an overview of the role of leadership, why there is so much bad leadership in the world today, and why crises often throw up more poor than good leaders. At the same time, we are entering a world of novel and interlinked crises, or omnicrisis, that makes the case for good leadership ever more pressing. Yet, a broad set of behavioural literature suggests that when individuals and societies are confronted with great challenges (as adverse to familiar and everyday ones), helplessness or apathy kicks in. This in turn reopens the question of what leadership really entails, and the role of specific types of investors in times of crisis; leadership matters not only in firms, but also for investors. This talk then explores the case of private equity, specific models for value generation, the growing challenges associated with exit, and alternative models of PE activity (e.g. shadow banking, minority stakes in firms). This is followed by further reflections on the prospects of the industry in a time of higher interest rates, and the leadership challenges and opportunities facing the industry.”
