*Event Dates: *

*15 March 2024 *(Online) & *20 March 2024 *(In-person)

*Application Deadline*

*31 December 2023*

Are you a doctoral student of international business with research
interests or data that are relevant to Latin America and the Caribbean
(LAC)? Are you working on a paper that is close to submission but that
could use developmental feedback? Do you intend to develop your
dissertation into a job market paper? Have you ever thought about
developing original case study material or thought about how to improve the
way you teach cases? Have you thought about which job market
(geographically) you intend to enter? If your answer is yes to any of
these, then the *2024 AIB-LAC Pre-Conference* is the right place for you!

AIB-LAC would like to invite you to our pre-conference event that will be
in *two formats*: (i) *Online* *on 15 March 2024* for the Doctoral
Consortium, who cannot attend the in-person pre-conference event; (ii)
*In-person
on 20 March 2024* (for all activities listed below).

We offer a range of developmental activities targeted to young researchers
of international business, but also of interest to experienced scholars,
with a focus on LAC, including:

· *Concurrent writing workshops including*: (i) *Doctoral
Consortium *for early-stage doctoral students; (ii) *PDW sponsored by JIBP*

job market papers); and (iii) *PDW sponsored by AIB Insights*. These three
writing workshops will be jointly sponsored by senior AIB-LAC members and
leading experts focused on emerging markets.

· *Teaching Cases Panel *sponsored by *AIB Teaching & Education SIG*
with senior AIB-LAC teaching experts to discuss developing and learning to
teach with original teaching case materials.

· *Professional Development and Career Panel* focused on navigating
between LAC and overseas job markets*.*

· *Meet the Editors Panel *for a chance to interact with current
editors at leading journals. More details to come.

· *Visit to the university campus* or a *local Jamaican company*
followed by a social networking event with top scholars from the region.

AIB-LAC offers the pre-conference program (online on March 15th, and

have an active AIB membership will be required to also register as AIB
members. *AIB kindly offers low membership fees to students, particularly
those from low-income countries. Additionally, joining as an AIB member has
numerous advantages, which you can find in the benefits section at the end
of this document.*

*WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE AIB-LAC PRE-CONFERENCE PROGRAM?*

We would like to welcome researchers of international business with an
interest in topics that are relevant to Latin America and the Caribbean at
all stages of their careers. You can register for the AIB-LAC conference,
which gives the right to participate in the pre-conference, and the full
conference at the main conference website.

Some activities in the program are specifically designed for a target
audience or require us to pre-select in order to allow for effective
interaction. Please, refer to criteria listed below:

· *DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM*

Participation in this activity requires an application (see instructions
below). The most suitable candidates for the Doctoral Consortium are
Ph.D./DBA students in international business and management, who have
completed their course work, are in the dissertation stage of their
programs, and have a relatively clear idea about their dissertation
research. AIB-LAC selects applicants based on the potential of the research
project, the perceived contribution to field and the geographical fit. As
mentioned before, we provide two options for the Doctoral Consortium:
an *online
format* and an *in-person format*. The online format is designed for Ph.D.
students who cannot attend the in-person pre-conference event. However, we
highly recommend the in-person format as it offers a wide range of
pre-conference activities and provides the opportunity for Ph.D. students
to attend the main conference as well.

· *PAPER DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS (PDW)*

Participation in this activity requires an application (see instructions
below) and will be an *in-person format*. Members of editorial board of
*JIBP* (*Journal of International Business Policy*) and *AIB Insights* will
work with senior AIB-LAC members to help early-stage faculty and recently
graduated researchers develop their work based on developmental feedback.
Additionally, we are excited to announce that we will also be accepting
prospective job-market papers at late stages of development from PhD
students who intend to enter the next job market cycle. Participation in
this activity requires an application. AIB-LAC intends to select papers
that have potential to be developed into a publication.

· *TEACHING CASES PANEL*

All attendees who register for and participate in the *in-person
pre-conference event* are invited to join this panel, which is sponsored by
the AIB Teaching & Education SIG. There is no requirement for an
application. We will hear from leading teaching experts on how to best
utilize cases in the classroom through an interactive exercise. The
discussion will be complemented by an informal discussion on best practices
and teaching tips offered by top teaching experts of the AIB-LAC Board.

· *PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND CAREER PANEL *

All attendees who register for and participate in the *in-person
pre-conference event* are invited to join the panel discussion. There is no
requirement for an application. In the panel you will hear from scholars in
the field who will provide insights on the advantages and challenges in
succeeding in both the LAC job market and abroad markets. Further, they
will share their own insights based on where they obtained their Ph.D.

· *ALL OTHER ACTIVITIES*

Networking activities, visit to the university campus or local company,
participate in optional tours, coffee breaks, etc. are open to all
attendees who register for and participate in the in-person pre-conference
event.

*APPLYING FOR THE DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM & PDW*

All of the required application materials listed below (Doctoral Consortium
or PDW) must be submitted through the AIB online submission system (
https://meetings.aib.msu.edu/lac/2024/) no later than *31 December 2023.*

Authors will be notified by *22 January 2024* about whether their proposal
has been accepted for discussion at the pre-conference and will be given
details about the workshop’s program. Please note that late submissions or
submissions that do not follow the listed requirements will not be
considered.

· *DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM*

1. *Letter of nomination from faculty advisor: *This short letter
should discuss the progress of the student in the program and his/her
academic performance and potential. It should state clearly in what phase
of the doctoral program the student is. If you graduated recently, you are
encouraged to apply for the *Paper Development Workshops* *(PDW)*.

2. *Student resume and abstract of dissertation proposal (5-page
maximum): *The first page should be your resume, highlighting your academic
and work experience, along with a list of publications and/or manuscripts
under review. Pages 2-5 should include title, author information, abstract,
keywords, and dissertation research summary. Diagrams, tables, and
references should be provided at the end of the document but do not count
towards the 5-page limit. The extended abstract should succinctly cover the
proposed research question, theoretical background, proposed research
design, and intended contribution. On the last page, include your *preference
of presentation*: Online or In-Person Format.

· *PAPER DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP (PDW)*

The pre-conference will feature two PDWs to happen concurrently and jointly
facilitated by senior members of AIB-LAC. One will be jointly facilitated
by JIBP and the other by AIB Insights. The aim of these PDWs is to provide
authors with guidance and expertise in the development of their manuscript,
thereby increasing the potential for publication. Please note that
presentation of your work in the workshop does not guarantee it will be
eventually accepted for publication by a journal. The required submission
material for the PDW consist of an extended abstract, detailed as follows:

*Extended Abstract*

· The extended abstract *of 1,000 to 1,500 words*.

*Criteria and Procedure for AIB-LAC Doctoral Consortium *

*Travel Stipends*

*Context:*

The Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) Chapter of the Academy of
International Business is increasingly aware of the challenges faced by
doctoral students and junior faculty from universities in the LAC region as
they seek to secure economic support for attending conferences and
presenting their work. Representing a community that cares about developing
the next generation of IB researchers, AIB-LAC’s Board has decided to offer
Travel Stipends to attend the Doctoral Consortium at the annual conference.

Support to be granted:

AIB-LAC Doctoral Consortium Travel Stipends shall not exceed the amount of
US$1,000 per recipient. Applicants who request a lower amount help AIB-LAC
to offer support to other students as well.

Given complexities associated with international funding transfers, AIB-LAC
shall provide AIB-LAC Doctoral Consortium Travel Stipends in the following
way:

Beneficiaries will receive either:

· Direct payment of flight costs up to the maximum US$1000.

· Direct payment of hotel costs up to the maximum US$1000.

Further details will be supplied to recipients of travel stipends at the
time of their notification.

*Selection Criteria:*

The selection of deserving beneficiaries shall connect with AIB-LAC’s goal
of increasing the number of qualified IB researchers in the LAC region. In
that context, AIB-LAC’s Board considers that becoming a member of AIB and
active involvement in the LAC chapter’s activities will contribute to
achieving this goal.

The AIB-LAC Doctoral Consortium Travel Stipend is intended to give PhD
students and faculty in an early stage of their career (1-2 years following
graduation from a PhD program), whose primary affiliation is with a
university located within the AIB-LAC region, an opportunity to attend the
Chapter’s annual conference.

The primary selection criterion is academic merit of the submission to the
Doctoral Consortium, irrespective of epistemological background, research
methodology applied, or topic studied within the field of IB.

The second selection criterion is real economic need. Economic need shall
be documented, and applicant efforts to obtain funding from alternative
sources shall be acknowledged. Applicants from low-income countries shall
be given priority.

The third selection criterion responds to AIB-LAC’s goal of increasing
diversity among its members. Applicants from underrepresented countries
and/or groups shall be given priority.

*Selection Procedure*:

In addition to their submission for the doctoral consortium, applicants for
the AIB-LAC Travel Stipend will need to submit the following materials to
the following e-mail address: December 31 (suggest using the same each
year):

· Curriculum Vitae (2-page maximum)

· Statement of economic need

· Nomination letter from the student's advisor

· A separate note or letter may be included in case the Applicant
would want to disclose any additional information to be considered.

Applications will be reviewed for completeness by the Pre-Conference Host
Chair.

AIB-LAC will rank applications using the following procedure:

· Academic merit (50% weight)

· Economic need (30% weight)

· Diversity (20% weight)

Applicants with the best overall weighted ranking will be nominated for the
AIB-LAC Travel Stipend.

Nominations will be reviewed and confirmed by the AIB-LAC Board before
Travel Stipends are awarded and announced.
