The recent impact event on 20 Nov 2023, An Agenda for Sustainable International Business, has attracted a great deal of interests and stimulated further discussions in various institutions and organisations. As a result, we now have an action supported by various components of the AIB. Please see attachment for details.

-------------- About the Agenda ----------------

 

Recording of the morning session that set the Agenda can be found here). An afternoon session also took place to strategize about the follow up actions. A range of stakeholders - programme directors, directors of student education, sustainability leads, executives, representatives of associations, AIB conference track organisers, and AIB SIG representatives - have contributed.  

 

Some highlights:

  • Evidence points to a strong demand for educational programmes that focus on developing the skill set needed for transforming businesses in line with sustainability principles.
  • The event identified what this skill set should comprise.
  • To develop these skills, International Business Education (design and provision) should adopt additional key principles, including:
    • The principle of truth-telling
    • The principle of sustainable value creation
    • The principle of inclusive growth
    • The principle of human development
    • The principle of developing and using big data analytics for better decision-making
    • The principles of sustainable business
    • The principle of multi-stakeholder engagement

 

  • By leveraging existing commitments and investments, global educational institutions possess the ability to collaborate through partnerships, thereby fostering the development of these skills in learners and ultimately achieving a critical mass for transformation.

 

  • The realm of engaged research in sustainable international business offers vast potential.
    • Both scholars and students, with the assistance of non-academic stakeholders, can conduct engaged and action-oriented research.
    • The key aspect is to concentrate on identifying and explaining effective interventions for sustainable business transformation.
    • The advancement in big data and analytics presents a valuable opportunity in this context.

 

  • As a result of the event's discussions, a Sustainable International Business Partnership (SIBP) is being formed.
    • The initial stage of the SIBP involves establishing a network of multiple stakeholders in order to collaborate on the development of a resource pool. This pool will be used to support a global poster competition focused on Sustainable International Business. Please find attached an introduction of the poster competition.
    • 10 Universities and 4 non-academic stakeholders (two SMEs associations, an educational provider, an ESG investor, and an MNE) have expressed interest in joining the SIBP network.
    • SIBP welcomes more stakeholders. Please use this link to express your interest. 

 

  • Drawing on insights from stakeholders and multi-disciplinary research, the Agenda for Sustainable International Business takes a decision-maker centred approach.
    • The Agenda calls for educational solutions to nurture the next generation of business leaders committed to sustainability.
    • The invaluable insights provided by the current decision-makers working in international trade, investment, and policy fields are acknowledged. We appeal for increased support to engage these decision-makers in teaching and research programmes, and to update our curriculum guidelines.
