Senior Lecturer Microbiology * Full time continuing position. Located on the Camperdown campus at the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at The University of Sydney * Exciting opportunity for a talented academic to join the Faculty of Science in a continuing research/teaching position in Microbiology * Base salary (Level C) $145,023 - $167,221 p.a. + 17% superannuation About the opportunity The School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES) at The University of Sydney is seeking to appoint a Research & Teaching academic (Senior Lecturer) in Microbiology. SOLES has remarkable interdisciplinary capabilities in life sciences that underpin the University of Sydney’s ambition to have a transformative impact in food production systems; preservation of natural ecosystems, and sustainability of human health and wellbeing. SOLES provides an interdisciplinary research and teaching environment that trains graduates for tackling complex modern problems related to the understanding and management of biological systems. Cutting-edge facilities and modern laboratories support our postgraduate students and researchers in continuing the University of Sydney’s eminent Life Sciences reputation across Agriculture, Ecology, Microbiology and Molecular Biology. The successful applicant will bring to the school expertise in microbiological systems – for example in synthetic biology, molecular microbiology, microbial ecology or environmental biotechnology. They will have research interests that complement and/or enrich the existing strengths in the School across Food and Agriculture, Conservation Biology, Ecosystem Sustainability and Health and Disease. They will have a developing independent research program in fundamental or applied microbiology, that has potential to contribute to translational research programs and outcomes. They will have a track-record of excellence in their research outputs and successful applications for research funding that is clearly on an upward trajectory. They should be able to articulate a vision for potential collaboration within SOLES and multi-disciplinary institutes at the University of Sydney. The successful applicant will demonstrate a strong commitment to the promotion of teaching and learning and an outstanding track record of undergraduate teaching and postgraduate research supervision. In this position they will lead curriculum development, and contribute to the teaching of, microbiology units within the core area of the Microbiology major and in a range of related majors within this highly interdisciplinary School. To this end, candidates should have a track record of innovative microbiology teaching, ability to inspire students across life science disciplines, and capacity to work within collaborative teaching teams. They are also expected to be actively involved in research training and supervision as part of their research program. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in management and administration. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Senior Lecturer in Microbiology who has: * a PhD in an appropriate area (microbial ecology, molecular microbiology, environmental science) that includes application of bioinformatics/genetic engineering/synthetic biology * obtained funding in national and international competitive research grants * demonstrated an independent research program with upward trajectory of research, leadership and international profile in their field * experience in Microbiology teaching related to microbial biotechnology and microbial ecology including lectures, tutorials and supervision of laboratory-based practicals * a demonstrated understanding and experience of relevant work, health and safety and compliance requirements including biosafety and working with genetically-modified organisms * experience in the successful supervision of honours and higher degree students, including PhD students * a clear vision of research which complements and/or enriches the existing strengths and expertise of the School in agriculture and food; synthetic biology or conservation biology OR a demonstrated capacity to bring their core research capabilities to new areas via interdisciplinary collaborative projects * excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication and time management skills and is an enthusiastic and collaborative team member.
