GLOBAL CITIES, MIGRATION, AND BUSINESS November 20, 2023 | Global Start Times: 12:00pm-1:30pm EST (New York City) 5:00pm-6:30pm GMT (London) 6:00pm-7:30pm CEST (Vienna) Description: Demographers predict that the largest inflow of migration to cities around the world is yet to come and that by 2030, 60% of the world’s population will be living in urban areas. The opportunities of these movements include the exchange of capital, knowledge, and ideas. However, metropolitan hubs also frequently suffer from pollution, congestion, and security, as well as difficulty integrating new arrivals into local communities. Despite these realities, we lack knowledge on the intersection between migration trends, the growth of global cities, and the businesses that operate within them. This webinar will bring thought leaders from academia and policy to address this gap. The author of the Wall Street Journal bestseller “2030: How Today’s Biggest Trends Will Collide and Reshape the Future of Everything,” Mauro F. Guillén (the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania) will open the discussion on the potential effects of the influx of migration to cities around the world. Next, Renate Meyer (Vienna University of Economics and Business) will address urban governance problems related to migration. Finally, Jason Gagnon (OECD) and Philip McCann (Alliance Manchester Business School) will share insights from their years of expertise in innovative policy solutions to these challenges. Guillén is Professor of Multinational Management and Vice Dean, MBA Program for Executives at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include economic sociology, emerging multinational firms, and globalization. His work has been featured in numerous outlets, such as the New York Times, The Economist, and the Financial Times. Mauro’s book 2030: How Today’s Biggest Trends Will Collide and Reshape the Future of Everything was a Wall Street Journal bestseller and a Financial Times Book of the Year. Renate Meyer is Professor at Vienna University of Economics and Business, the Head of the Institute for Organization Studies and Co-Director of the Research Institute for Urban Management & Governance. She also holds visiting positions at Copenhagen Business School, Oxford University, and University of Alberta. Her research interests include the institutionalization of management innovations, translation ecosystems, institutional renewal, collective action in crises, as well as governance arrangements and governance gaps in urban and multisector settings. Jason Gagnon is a Senior Economist with the OECD Development Centre and heads its unit on migration and skills, producing empirically-based policy reports, coordinating its Policy Dialogue on Migration and Development, and co-chairing a KNOMAD thematic working group. In addition to international migration, he has led reports on internal migration, urbanization, social cohesion, well-being, and development strategies, and has been a core author of the OECD’s Perspectives on Global Development flagship. He holds a PhD in economics from the Paris School of Economics. Philip McCann, one of the most highly cited regional economists globally, is a Professor of Urban and Regional Economics at Alliance Manchester Business School. He has served as an adviser to two European Commissioners, the European Commission, the OECD, the European Investment Bank, as well as government ministries and research institutes in several countries. His research focuses on spatial economics, economic geography, and migration. He is also an Advisory Board member of Migration, Business & Society.
