Dear IB Community,

Please see below for my school’s notice soliciting interested PhD applications (due Jan 30th). I’d like to add that it’s a great place to be. We have a small PhD program with lots of integration with faculty. People care for each other here; it’s the kind of place I would’ve liked to be as a PhD student. We also have a lot of depth in IB so it’s a good place to pursue IB research. Please forward this to anyone who might be interested in joining us next year.

Warmly,

Stacey Fitzsimmons

The Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria is accepting applications for our PhD Program. We hope that you will pass along the attached poster to your students who may be interested in pursuing a research-focused PhD program. We welcome applications from students from a wide variety of disciplines; our past/current students have backgrounds and experiences in the areas of Public Health, History, Anthropology, Development Studies, Environmental Studies, Public Administration, Indigenous Communities, International/Cultural Studies and Business. At Gustavson, our school’s strategy supports and encourages research to be interdisciplinary, cross-disciplinary, or multidisciplinary in nature. Aligned with the University of Victoria’s research strategic purpose, our School of Business and PhD program are community-minded and globally engaged, and our research transforms ideas into meaningful impact.

The Gustavson PhD program focuses on organizations and the individuals within them, in the context of today’s changing world, with an awareness of environmental and/or societal impacts. PhD students enter our four year program as part of a cohort, take a set of core theoretical and empirical courses in their first two years of their program, which then provides them with a solid foundation for their dissertation work that takes place in the last two years of the program. Students will be trained in both quantitative and qualitative research, and will be equipped with research design skills to appropriately address their research questions. All admitted students are provided with a competitive financial package to cover living expenses and tuition, with funds for conference travel and dissertation expenses.

Gustavson PhD students will actively engage in research and teaching experiences throughout their program to guide and prepare them for a tenure-track research position at a top-ranked academic research institution upon graduation. PhD students will have the opportunity to learn from and work closely with internationally recognized research faculty members who serve on editorial boards and have published in highly ranked management journals. We have a small and focused cohort of students who have, upon graduation, taken tenure track positions at leading universities around the world. Over the last two years, our graduates have been placed at Smeal College of Business, Penn State University (USA), Smith School of Business, Queen’s University (Canada), Warwick Business School, University of Warwick (UK), and Newcastle University Business School (UK).

At the Gustavson School of Business, we believe that management education has a central role to play in creating meaningful change for a better world. We aspire to prepare graduates who think differently and act responsibly. The School is home to the Centre for Social and Sustainable Innovation (CSSI), and we are in the 5% of business schools worldwide, who hold both AACSB and EQUIS accreditation. The Gustavson School of Business is located in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, Canada – our University of Victoria campus provides the perfect backdrop for inspiration of new research.

Our deadline is January 30, 2024 for September 2024 admissions, and we encourage interested students to contact Wendy Mah, our PhD Program Manager, at [log in to unmask] early on in the process to discuss the program and application process. We would also be pleased to give a presentation (on Zoom) about our program to groups of interested students.

Sincerely,
