Increasing Ocean Literacy, Action, and Responsible Decision-making for the Ocean
Session Description: Ocean literacy is an understanding of the ocean’s influence on you, and your influence on the ocean. An ocean-literate person:
- understands the Essential Principles and Fundamental Concepts about the ocean;
- can communicate about the ocean in a meaningful way
- and is able to make informed and responsible decisions regarding the ocean and its resources.
In this session, we will explore transformative programming and/or education research that relates to the Ocean Decade Outcome 7 of, an “inspiring and engaging ocean where society understands and values the ocean in relation to human well-being and sustainable development” and seeks to “fundamentally change humanity’s relationship with the ocean.”
This session:
Provides an opportunity to share results, lessons learned and impacts of educational research focused on ocean literacy and/or implementation and evaluation of formal, informal, or community engagement programs designed to foster ocean understanding.
Particularly welcomes contributions that address resources, tools, and techniques available to educators, youth, and early career professionals and practical approaches to cultivating ocean literacy among individuals and communities.
Aims to foster participant awareness and facilitate networking and collaboration for future initiatives related to ocean literacy.
