Webinar summary:
It is widely accepted that workplace relationships are of vital importance – they can affect many aspects of work, including staff well-being, staff retention and project success. Language and communication, of course, are core to relationship management, and cultural factors add an extra layer of complexity to this. In this talk I explore some of the challenges of managing workplace relationships in contexts of cultural diversity, especially in international business. With the help of authentic mini case studies from various parts of the world, I illustrate a range of interpersonal and intercultural clashes that can occur, analysing them using the TRIPS rapport management framework.  This is a new framework that I am currently developing. Grounded in a sociocultural pragmatics approach to language and communication, its aim is to provide an accessible set of concepts and tools that professionals can use to help them deal with relationship challenges at work.

About the speaker:
Helen Spencer-Oatey is Managing Director of GlobalPeople Consulting Ltd. (GPC) and Emeritus Professor of Intercultural Communication at the University of Warwick, UK. Working at the interface of psychology and communication, she is internationally renowned for her writings on intercultural rapport, relationships and communication, including her most recent books Intercultural Politeness (with Kádár, CUP, 2021/2023) and Global Fitness for Global People: How to manage and leverage cultural diversity at work (with Franklin & Lazidou, Castledown, 2022). She has developed a wide range of popular diagnostic tools and professional development resources for organisations, teams and individuals – most now available via GlobalPeople Consulting Ltd. – and is currently working on a new book Making Working Relationships Work (with Lazidou, Castledown, in preparation).

Best wishes
