We are pleased to announce that Volume 8, Issue 2, 2023 of Japan MNE Insights is now available online (http://www.mne-jp.org/english/column.html) and in PDF format. It is the official newsletter of the Japan Academy of Multinational Enterprises.

This issue includes two special essays, the summaries of which are shared below.

 "Global Rise in Non-Democratization and Japan's International Business" by Shige Makino (Kyoto University, Japan).

Synopsis: This essay discusses how recent non-democratization movements have affected global economic growth and social development. It then points to three strategic directions for the future development of Japanese firms' international business. These are: pursuit of Ally advantage, turning Non-Ally disadvantage into advantage, and making competitive advantage independent of politics.

"The Challenges in Internationalization of Japanese SMEs in the Food Manufacturing Industry" by Chitose Furukawa (Aichi University, Japan).

Synopsis: Japanese SMEs in the food manufacturing industry are expanding their business overseas with support from the Japanese central and local governments. However, there are barriers to their internationalization. Based on the observation of attending an international trade show in Hong Kong, the HKTDC Food Expo, this essay explores the struggles and challenges of those SMEs. Furthermore, this essay explains the future perspectives for accelerating the processes of Japanese SMEs’ internationalization in the food manufacturing industry.
