Dear friends and colleagues, We are delighted to announce the publication of the April 2023 issue (volume 32, issue 2) of International Business Review. This issue is a real treat! The lead paper – the third in our occasional series of Perspectives - is authored by Giovanna Magnani & Denny Gioia on “Using the Gioia methodology in international business and entrepreneurship research.” The authors first outline the fundamental philosophical and methodological underpinnings of the methodology. They then describe the three key stages of the methodology namely (1) the creation of a data structure containing first-order (informant centered) codes and second-order (theory centered) themes and aggregate dimensions; (2) the development of a grounded theoretical model, via constant comparison of data over time and across informants and; (3) the presentation of the findings by means of a detailed, data-based narrative, usually using the second-order themes and aggregated dimensions, with frequent reference to the informants’ first-order quotations. As they state, ‘grounded theories using the GM approach aim for “analytical generalization”, not “statistical generalization,” leading to the transferability of results based on a theoretical examination of the variables influencing outcomes and the impact of context.’ Finally, the authors provide a comprehensive summary of many of the papers that have used variations of the Gioia methodology in International Business and International Entrepreneurship research. In our opinion, this paper should be required reading for all qualitative researchers, and also for quantitative researchers who question whether qualitative analysis can be rigorous. The rest of the issue is devoted to a Special Section on “Managing cross-border knowledge for innovation”, guest edited by Hussain Rammal, Elizabeth Rose & João Ferreira. The section contains twelve complementary and insightful articles on this vital contemporary topic.
