WHY A JOURNAL-BASED PDW?

Interest in research and publishing on topics pertaining to sustainability has become increasingly prevalent in International Business (IB), particularly over the past few years. Given that much of sustainability research is by nature interdisciplinary and has the great potential to become a core part of the IB research domain, the AIB Sustainability Shared Interest Group (SIG) has organized this in-person paper development workshop (PDW) as part of the preconference program at the Academy of International Business Annual Meeting in Warsaw. The workshop aims to support AIB members who are working on sustainability-related topics by providing tailored insights and feedback from editors of four leading IB journals, namely Journal of International Business StudiesJournal of World BusinessInternational Business Review, and Global Strategy Journal

WHO IS THIS EVENT FOR?

This PDW aims to benefit AIB members with an interest in sustainability-related research, particularly those who have a draft paper and would like to receive constructive feedback from the four journal editors in terms of paper crafting, theoretical development, and/or methodological soundness.

HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE IN THE WORKSHOP?

To be considered for the PDW, we invite authors to submit an extended abstract (max. 2 pages) by emailing [log in to unmask]. It is important to use “Sustainability SIG PDW Warsaw” in the subject line. The submission deadline for the extended abstract is March 1, 2023, in the author’s time zone.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY ABSTRACT IS ACCEPTED?

Submitting authors will be notified of the outcomes of the review process by March 30, 2023. Authors with accepted abstracts will also be required to submit their full working papers and confirm their participation 2023 (a maximum of one participating author per paper) in the PDW by April 20. If an author fails to confirm their participation and/or submit a full working paper, the opportunity to attend the PDW will be offered to someone else.

Please note that the PDW participating author will need to register for the AIB Warsaw Conference by May 1 in order to participate in this in-person Pre-Conference PDW.

HOW IS THIS EVENT STRUCTURED?

The workshop is half-day and consists of two parts. One part offers participants an opportunity to hear sustainability research and publication insights from each of the journal editors. The other part offers an opportunity for editors and authors to have one-to-one roundtable conversations on their accepted research papers. The workshop is preliminary planned to start at 12noon and end by 5pm.

WHO ARE THE PARTICIPATING JOURNAL EDITORS AT THIS PDW?

JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS STUDIES

Participating Area Editors: Jonathan Doh and Ans Kolk

Journal Statement: “Since 2015, United Nations (UN) member states have endorsed the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that seek to address and redress societal grand challenges. On the surface, while some of the UNSDGs appear to be more germane to other scientific disciplines, given the geographic dispersion of MNEs and their access to resources (both financial and non-financial), they can play an important role in raising awareness and facilitating changes and initiatives to bring about the desired targets/outcomes. As researchers and educators, we have a moral obligation to raise awareness of these issues and, more importantly, to prepare our students/mentees (alumni of our universities as well as the next generation of scholars) to devote greater attention to the attainment of UNSDG goals, thereby “making JIBS matter for a better world”

JOURNAL OF WORLD BUSINESS

Participating EiC: Ajai Gaur

Journal Statement: “Journal of World Business is interested in publishing high quality empirical and theoretical work on the theme of sustainability. The journal recently had a call for papers on the role of multinational in helping achieve the United Nations SDGs. We have area editors dedicated to this topic and have been historically receptive to phenomena-based research on issues of social and practical relevance, such as sustainability”

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS REVIEW

Participating Co-EiC: Roger Strange

Journal Statement: “Sustainable development and climate change are key elements of the “new realities” in the contemporary business landscape (Ghauri et al, 2021). Economic growth in the past decades has been associated not just with rising income levels, but also with environmental degradation, resource depletion, and widening economic and social inequalities between and within nations. In what ways do multinational enterprises exacerbate these problems, or are they potentially part of the solution? How do climate change and the sustainable development agenda impact the cross-border operations of firms and the organization of global value chains? IB research has an important role in examining these issues, and also considering the roles of national policy-makers, supranational organizations, and other influential stakeholders. At International Business Review, we are eager to lead and participate in this debate and so we warmly welcome manuscripts on these issues.”

GLOBAL STRATEGY JOURNAL

Participating Co-EiCs: Grazia Santangelo, Alvaro Cuervo-Cazurra, and Gabriel Benito

Journal Statement: “Global Strategy Journal (GSJ) is the leading journal on global strategic management research. It aims to shape the direction of conversations on the interaction between the global context and strategic management. Strategic sustainability is a topic of interest to the journal. Organizations operating across borders must deal with the challenges of combing successful organizational performance and positive societal impact, especially in the context of the global climate crisis and geopolitical turmoil. GSJ is delighted to host a conversation at the Academy of International Business 2023 Annual Meeting on the strategic decision and actions of for-profit multinational enterprises, SMEs, NGOs, and supra-national entities regarding strategic sustainability and sustainability-related issues in the global context.”
