Position Summary: I am recruiting a research assistant/lab manager to join my team investigating lake and fish community responses to climate change, species invasions, and land use change. This position offers an opportunity to be involved in multiple research projects in many different ways, including data collation, database management, data analysis and visualization, field and lab work, and other research and administrative tasks. The successful candidate will interact regularly with PI Hansen, post-docs, graduate students, undergraduates, and collaborators from other Universities, state agencies, federal agencies, and local stakeholder groups.

Job Duties:

  * Data collation and database management (25%). Many of the projects in the Hansen lab involve collating data from multiple sources to use in landscape-level analyses. The successful candidate will lead data collation from state agencies, build and maintain metadata, and build and maintain workflows and data pipelines for data QA/QC and facilitate data sharing within and outside of the lab group.
  * Field and lab work (25%). Several ongoing projects involve field sampling and lab processing of fish, invertebrate, and water samples. The successful candidate will work closely with graduate students and undergraduate workers to collect and process data. This portion of the job will require travel to lakes throughout Minnesota.
  * Assist with research operations on multiple projects (25%). The successful candidate will be the go-to person for the varied tasks that are required for running a successful research lab. These tasks include training, assisting with grant writing, manuscript writing, budget management, purchasing and maintaining equipment, report writing, administrative tasks, and assisting students and/or post-docs to support the general mission of the group.
  * Outreach and coordination with community members in support of sponsored research projects (15%). Duties include developing protocols and training materials to support community science, coordinating with outreach staff to recruit and train volunteers to collect water samples for eDNA analysis, answering questions from volunteers, and communicating findings via presentations and written materials.
  * Data analysis and development of data visualization tools (10%). The successful candidate will assist with ongoing analyses as well as have the opportunity to develop and pursue their own research questions as time permits. They will also be expected to lead the development of data visualization tools for increasing the visibility and impact of projects within the lab.

Required Qualifications: Successful candidates must possess at least a Bachelor’s degree and two years experience. Strong communication skills, project management skills, experience working with large datasets, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently are critical.

Preferred qualifications: Master’s degree in a related field; experience developing and maintaining databases; data analysis skills; experience developing data visualization tools; experience working as part of multi-disciplinary research teams; experience in aquatic ecology field sampling; and experience working with natural resource agencies.
