Subject: [Unio] [EXTERNAL] MS Graduate Assistantship--Thermal Tolerance of the Western Ridged Mussel

This email has been received from outside of DOI - Use caution before clicking on links, opening attachments, or responding.

CTUIR Freshwater Mussel Research and Restoration Project is studying the thermal tolerance of Gonidea angulata, the Western Ridged Mussel and its host fishes (sculpins). We are seeking a graduate student to work on this project. Please see ad below for details. Feel free to contact Dr. Nagler or myself with questions.

MS Graduate Assistantship

Department of Biological Sciences,

University of Idaho,

Moscow, ID.

Responsibilities: Pursue graduate thesis research on the thermal tolerance of the western ridged mussel (Gonidea angulata) and its host fishes (sculpins, Cottus spp.). Harvest of freshwater mussels, a First Food of significant cultural and ecological importance, remains a treaty right for Columbia Plateau Tribes like the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Currently, harvest is not possible as the range of the western ridged mussel has been shrinking and the species has been extirpated from many areas. While many issues affecting this mussel are not well understood, one environmental factor may be increasing water temperature due to climate change. The research plan will include both field and laboratory-based components to examine thermal tolerances of both the mussel and host fishes. This position will be funded as a research assistantship the first year and a teaching assistantship at the university during the second year.

Qualifications: BS biology, environmental science, fisheries, or a closely related field.

Stipend: $26,000 per year + tuition (and health insurance if needed)

Closing date: This position will start in January 2023 but be open until filled.

Contact: Please send letter of intent and resume with contact information (phone and email) to: Dr. James Nagler, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Idaho, PO Box 443051, Moscow, ID 83844-3051 or [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
