PhD Research Assistantship: Ecology of vertebrate hosts-tick interactions – Texas State University

I am looking for a highly motivated PhD student to do research within the area of ecological interactions between vertebrate wildlife hosts (mostly mammals) and ticks. The context for this research is focused on the role these interactions have to contribute to the maintenance and spread of pathogens vectored by ticks. Specific research questions are flexible within this area and will be dependent on specific research interests of the student within this academic field. The focus of analyses will likely be data derived mostly from fieldwork about vertebrate communities, individual host species behavior, and tick monitoring, all within an ecological context and potentially complemented with habitat use modeling. Thus, a student with highly quantitative and integrative mindset is an asset and one well suited for this project.

Required Qualifications:

  * Bachelor and Master’s degree in wildlife science, biology, ecology or related fields.
  * >3.5 GPA for both degrees.
  * Highly quantitative aptitude and statistical knowledge.
  * Excellent writing ability (e.g., thesis or publications).
  * Excellent knowledge about taxonomy/ecology of mammals.
  *   Previous experience conducting research.
  * Must be self-motivated, organized, responsible and being able to coordinate with a large group of colleagues.
  * Must be willing to quickly learn relevant specific analytical methods.

Preferred Qualifications

  * Experience doing fieldwork with ticks.
  * Experience doing fieldwork with wildlife.
  * Experience with GIS and modeling.
  * Experience or familiarity with the use of null models in ecology.

Support for this PhD position will be through a Research Assistantship starting in Fall 2023. This RA will provide $3,300 per month for 12 months, will include tuition remission and is renewable for up to four years upon satisfactory degree progress. For consideration, please email Dr. Ivan Castro-Arellano ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) a SINGLE PDF that includes: letter of interest, resume, unofficial transcripts, and contact information for 3 references. The letter of interest must explain your experience relevant to the minimum and preferred qualifications and how the position would fit with your academic and professional goals. Letters that do not address these points explicitly will not be considered. Please include “PhD Assistantship Application – tick hosts” in the subject line of that email. Materials will be reviewed as received and the position filled upon finding a suitable applicant (Ideally final selection of a candidate will be no later than December 17th, 2022). There is no need to submit an official application through the university until the selection of a candidate is complete. The selected candidate will need to be able to apply to the PhD program deadline of January 15, 2023 (see below links for the application requirements). International students are strongly encouraged to apply.
