PhD Research Assistantship: Ecology of activity patterns in mammals – Texas State University

I am looking for a highly motivated PhD student to help coordinate and do research in a project related to large scale patterns of activity patters of mammal species (mostly terrestrial, non-volant mammals) and how do these are relevant to community structure. Specific research questions are flexible within this area and will be dependent on specific research interests of the student within this academic topic. The basis of analyses will be data derived from camera trapping that will be evaluated in a macroecological comparative context. Thus, a student with highly quantitative and integrative mindset is an asset and one well suited for this project.

Qualifications:

  * Bachelor and Master’s degree in wildlife science, biology, conservation or related fields.
  * >3.5 GPA for both degrees.
  * Highly quantitative aptitude and statistical knowledge.
  * Excellent writing ability (e.g., thesis or publications).
  *   Fully bilingual (Spanish/English).
  *   Previous experience conducting research.
  * Excellent knowledge about taxonomy/ecology of tropical mammals.
  * Must be self-motivated, organized, responsible and being able to coordinate with a large group of colleagues.
  * Must be willing to quickly learn relevant specific analytical methods.

Preferred Qualifications

  * Experience working with camera traps both in the field and for data processing derived from this work.
  * Experience doing fieldwork in Latin America, specifically Mexico.
  *   Experience with GIS.
  * Experience or familiarity with the use of null models in ecology.

Support for this PhD position will be through a Research Assistantship starting in Fall 2023. This RA will provide $3,300 per month for 12 months, will include tuition remission and is renewable for up to four years upon satisfactory degree progress. For consideration, please email Dr. Ivan Castro-Arellano ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) a SINGLE PDF that includes: letter of interest, resume, unofficial transcripts, and contact information for 3 references. The letter of interest must explain your experience relevant to the minimum and preferred qualifications and how the position would fit with your academic and professional goals. Letters that do not address these points explicitly will not be considered. Please include “PhD Assistantship Application – Activity Patterns” in the subject line of that email. Materials will be reviewed as received and the position filled upon finding a suitable applicant. There is no need to submit an official application through the university until the selection of a candidate is complete. The selected candidate will need to be able to apply to the PhD program deadline of January 15, 2023 (see below links for the application requirements). International students are strongly encouraged to apply.
