Description

Small island developing states (SIDS) share several potential socio-economic and political challenges such as having small markets and populations, remoteness, lack of physical resources, and vulnerability to natural disasters. This combination of factors also means that they may be more vulnerable to economic shocks than other economies. In addition, many SIDS have to deal with the historical and structural constraints of colonialism. Indeed, in some Caribbean countries this year marks 60 years since they gained independence from colonial regimes, a significant period in which to assess the evolution of innovation and development policies. In this panel we will explore how innovation and development has occurred in the context of SIDS and strategies for improvement going forward
