Dear MIFFS Supporters,

What a wonderful time of year! The leaves are turning, the temps are cooling and the harvest is rolling in! We have some great things going on around the state this month and lots of funding opportunities and resources (like all the SARE grant opportunities!)The miffs.org/resources page is constantly updated to include the most up to date workshops, jobs, resources, and grants. We are excited to be part of the MI CSA Network that will be having a visioning session on Thursday, November 3, 2022 from 10am-4pm. The Michigan CSA Network is a community for CSA farmers and support organizations to meet, learn, collaborate and network to achieve the goals of small farm viability and increased food access and equity. The gathering will explore the opportunities and challenges for CSAs in Michigan and help craft network vision and goals for the next several years. The event is free to attend and stipends are offered for participation in the Network. There will be an opportunity to request a stipend during the registration process. More information and registration is available here (registration will be live on Monday 10/10). The Michigan Family Farms Conference (MFFC) planning team is currently seeking presenters for the 2023 MFFC, and we would like to hear from you! We are accepting proposals for any sessions that provide valuable insights for small to mid-sized farms or connect farmers to resources that could make their farms more viable and sustainable.   • Native Farm Bill Coalition Breaking Down the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health Webinar. October 14, 1-2pm. Members of the NFBC Executive Committee will cover highlights from the historic conference held on September 28, 2022, as well as dive into how the conference and the Biden/Harris Administration’s National Strategy could impact Indian Country.   • Join the 2023 Organic Farmer Training Program in Detroit or East Lansing! For the first time, MSU Organic Farmer Training Program participants can choose between two sites for hands-on learning, either Keep Growing Detroit or the MSU Student Organic Farm in East Lansing. Beginning & aspiring farmers, homesteaders, schoolyard gardeners, farmworkers and food systems changemakers of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. More info here 

  • Virtual Farmer Workshop: Bringing the Farm to Early Care and Education December 13 1-4pmThere is significant untapped market potential for producers in Michigan to sell their products to early care and education (ECE) settings like preschools and child care settings. This half-day training will help farm producers and growers in Michigan build their capacity to sell to ECE settings. The training will offer practical tools and relevant information to farmers and process to help plan and sell to nearby ECEs. Register here

  • Project Wingspan: Agricultural Lands & Habitat Management WorkshopOctober 13 9am.Learn about the benefits provided to agricultural lands from integrating pollinator habitat. The workshop will provide technical guidance to help you create and manage different habitat installation types to support your land, increase productivity, improve soil and water health, and support pollinators. Pollinator Partnership and Project Wingspan Agricultural Lands, in partnership with LaPorte County Soil & Water Conservation District, Pheasants Forever/Quail Forever, and the Natural Resource Conservation Service invite members of the agricultural community to participate in the upcoming in-person workshop to increase knowledge of practices that both support pollinator conservation and directly benefit agricultural lands! More info here

  • RMA Roadshow MRMA is offering virtual workshops on Oct. 11, Oct. 13, Nov. 15, and Dec. 13 for agricultural producers — especially important to specialty crop, organic, urban, and direct market producers— and stakeholders to learn about the latest updates and improvements to the Whole-Farm Revenue Protection (WFRP) and the Micro Farm insurance options. RMA will host these workshops for agricultural producers via Microsoft Teams events to help them understand and know more about these very important insurance options. The Roadshows will include RMA Administrator Marcia Bunger and other team members to highlight important improvements to Whole-Farm and Micro Farm and answer questions about these insurance options.
