POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Position: Fish Culturist (full time – permanent position)
Location: Snettisham Hatchery (REMOTE, near Juneau, Alaska)
Starting Date: Negotiable – November of 2022 preferred

DIPAC is looking to fill the position of Fish Culturist at Snettisham Hatchery. Snettisham Hatchery is a remote private non-profit hatchery located approximately 30 air miles south of Juneau, Alaska and is accessible only by airplane or boat. Snettisham produces sockeye salmon for the common property fisheries of Northern Southeast Alaska.

General Description: This is an entry-level fish culture position. The successful candidate will be involved with all facets of sockeye salmon production. This position works under the direction of the Hatchery Manager and Assistant Hatchery Managers and follows sockeye fish culture techniques developed specifically for Snettisham Hatchery. The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include (but are not limited to), fry and smolt rearing, broodstock collection, adult harvest, eggtakes, egg picking, fry transport, remote field camp projects. Additional duties include operating hatchery equipment such as forklifts, front-end loaders, egg sorters, power tools, marine craft, and other associated equipment.

Qualifications, Skills & Abilities: One-year experience as a fish culturist and/or a two year Associates degree in aquaculture or fisheries. The successful candidate must have the willingness to further develop applicable fish culture methods and knowledge as pertains to Snettisham Hatchery and actively participate in facility development. Other desirable skills include basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry and experience on computers using spreadsheets.

The candidate must be willing and able to live and work cooperatively at a remote facility as to create a positive environment among other permanent staff and temporary employees. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Alaska driver’s licenses. Must be in good physical health, be able to work in inclement weather, and must have the ability to lift, push, or pull heavy loads.
The above requirements may be waived if the candidate for this position is otherwise qualified.

Salary and Benefits: Salary DOE. Benefits include company paid housing and utilities, medical, dental and life insurance, 401(k) retirement plan, paid annual, sick and holiday leave.

Living Conditions: A two-bedroom furnished duplex with satellite internet access and telephone service is provided. Twice weekly mail flights are available for mail and grocery deliveries.
