*Project: Foreign Direct Investment in the Berlin-Brandenburg Area

In spite of some high-profile investments by foreign companies, the flow and stock of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Berlin-Brandenburg area remains below average compared to other federal states in Germany. Nevertheless, foreign-controlled enterprises play an important role in the socio-economic development of the region. Foreign-controlled enterprises establish representative office in Germany’s capital, participate in the promising start-up sector in Berlin (e.g. GoEuro, Auto 1), or engage in high profile industrial investments (e.g. Alsthom/Bombardier; Tesla). What is more, despite ongoing efforts to municipalize infrastructure services, notable foreign investments can still be found in energy, housing and public transport (e.g. Vattenfall, Energie, Blackrock).

Till date, the activities of foreign-controlled companies in Berlin-Brandenburg have received little academic attention. The strategic goals of investors in the Berlin-Brandenburg region and the location factors that play an important role in this process have not been examined systematically, nor have the effects of these investments on Berlin-Brandenburg as a business location been analysed.

Using quantitative and qualitative methods, the project, at the interface of international business, economic geography and economic policy, aims to:

(1) determine the status of  FDI and distinct strategies of foreign investors in Berlin-Brandenburg,

(2) examine investor strategies with regard to their regional orientation (network effects) and their use of location-specific factors (e.g. sales market, labour force, infrastructure, production costs, socio-cultural environment) in order to

(3a) develop cooperation strategies for small and medium-sized enterprises in Berlin-Brandenburg, and

(3b) to derive a sustainable policy for attracting foreign investors that benefit the Berlin-Brandenburg region.
